The patriarch of the famous family aerialist certainly knew what he was talking about after a lifetime of exciting, edge-of-the-chair for his public appearances. Although the game may not be high for a jazz band to improvise in a recording studio or a live audience, Spyro Gyra leader and saxophonist Jay Beckstein understand the passion that drives a person and makes life on the wire "so attractive. Their new album, Down the Wire is a snapshot of Spyro Gyra's continued commitment to walking along that wire.

For more than three decades, they have a position in the forefront of modern jazz by successfully managing not one but several feat of creative skill. "That is what has kept this band going," said Beckstein. "There are always balance - of the individual player and the group between the songwriter and player. This is both to satisfy yourself and meet your audience. And when you improvise in front of an audience, you really are that thread. There are always surprises that way, but our openness to those surprises is what this band what it is. We just happen to run a little more forgiving tight rope. "

Wanted Down The Wire which is in Spyro Gyra's considerable legacy, Beck Stein is quick to respond. "You know, everybody on the thread know one thing sure," Beckstein laughs. "The real trouble if you are looking behind you. The future is for you."
