Van Zandt was in the audience and playfully heckled Earle wide performance for the song Wabash Cannonball Earle admitted that he did not know how to play the melody and Van Zandt replied incredible You call yourself a folk singer and you know not Wabash Cannonball? Earle then silenced him by playing the Van Zandt song Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold, no easy feat because of the rapidly changing mouthful of lyrics squeezed in just over two minutes of the song. Their bond was immediately formed. In Townes, Earle and his son, singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle (named after Van Zandt) trade verses on the melody, a number of whom two have been playing together since Justin was a teenager.

The songs selected for Townes were those who meant the most to Earle and he personally connected to (not including selections featured on previous albums Earle). Some of the selections were chosen songs that Earle played his entire career (Pancho and Lefty, the lungs, White Freight Liner Blues) and others to learn he had specially for recording.
